Free WhatsApp Chatbot: What's Actually Free in 2026, and What Isn't
Most "free WhatsApp chatbot" lists were written before Meta started charging for AI replies in August 2026 and for ordinary replies in October. Here is what you genuinely get for free, which free tools get your number banned, and when free stops making sense.

Is there a free WhatsApp chatbot?
Yes, and the honest answer is longer than that.
There are genuinely free ways to reply automatically on WhatsApp. There are free tiers on paid tools that are useful rather than decorative. And there is a large category of "free unlimited" tools that will eventually cost you your phone number, which is the most expensive free thing in business software.
What makes this question harder than it was six months ago is that Meta changed what "free" means twice this year. Most of the comparison lists you will find were written before those changes.
What "free" actually means in 2026
A WhatsApp chatbot has three separate meters, and a tool being free only ever refers to the first one.
1. The tool. The software that reads messages and decides what to say. This is where free tiers, trials and open source options live.
2. Message delivery. Meta's own charge for delivering your message to the customer. This meter only exists on the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta's official API. The free Business app has never charged per message. On the Platform, replying inside the 24 hour window a customer opened was free until recently, and from 1 October 2026 those service messages are billable again, whether a human typed them or software sent them.
3. The AI itself. If your bot uses a language model, someone pays for the thinking. Meta charges for its own agent per token from 1 August 2026 on the Platform, roughly 4 to 5 US cents per message. In the Business app, Meta's agent is free today and moving to a subscription at a date Meta has not announced. A third-party tool either bills you for model usage or absorbs it into a subscription.
We separate the app and the Platform, with Meta's published figures, in Meta Business Agent pricing. The short version: on the app you still reply for free, and from October, on the Platform, there is no free way to reply at all. Any Platform tool still claiming free replies is quietly paying meter two on your behalf, or has not read the update.
What you genuinely get for free
Three things, and they are worth knowing before you go shopping.
The WhatsApp Business app. Free to download, and its away message, greeting message and quick replies cost nothing to use. This is real automation and for a one-person shop with light volume it is often enough. It is fixed text rather than a conversation, and we cover the setup in detail in WhatsApp auto reply.
Free tiers on real platforms. Most serious AI tools, ours included, have a tier that lets you run a real number of conversations at zero subscription cost. This is the honest way to test whether AI replies actually convert for your business before committing a budget.
Trials. Time-limited but usually unrestricted. Fine for evaluation, useless as a plan.
Notice what is missing from this list: unlimited free AI replies at scale on the API. Nobody offers that, because from October nobody can.
The "free unlimited" tools that get your number banned
There is a whole category of tools promising unlimited free messaging, bulk blasts to imported contact lists, and automation on a normal WhatsApp account with no approval process. They usually work by driving WhatsApp Web or an unofficial library rather than the official platform.
They do work, right up until they do not. Meta detects the pattern, and the outcome is a banned number. Not a warning, not a suspended feature, the number your customers have saved for years.
The tell is simple. If a tool lets you message people who never messaged you, at volume, without opt-in and without template approval, it is operating outside Meta's rules and you are the one carrying the risk. We explain what is actually permitted, and what gets numbers killed, in WhatsApp automation.
What a useful free tier looks like
Free tiers exist to let you evaluate, so judge them on whether you can actually learn something:
- Enough conversations to see a pattern. A cap of ten conversations tells you nothing.
- The real product, not a crippled one. If the free tier cannot use your product catalogue or your FAQs, you are testing a demo rather than the thing you would buy.
- Your data comes with you. Leads and conversations you captured on the free tier should still be there when you upgrade, and exportable if you leave.
- A clear line to the paid tier. You should be able to work out, before you start, what crossing the line will cost you per month.
- Honesty about Meta's charges. Meta's message fees are not something a vendor can wave away. A tool that pretends they do not exist is telling you something about the rest of its pricing.
When free stops making sense
Free is the right answer for longer than most vendors admit. If you get a handful of enquiries a week and you answer them yourself within minutes, an away message is genuinely all you need.
The maths changes at the point where the enquiries you miss are worth more than the subscription. One recovered order a month usually covers an entry-level plan outright. So the question is not "can I get this free", it is "how many customers went quiet last month because nobody replied for six hours", and that number is usually easy to find and uncomfortable to look at.
The second trigger is repetition. When the same five questions make up most of your inbox, you are paying for them already, in your own time. Automating those is not an expense, it is a swap.
The takeaway
There is real free automation on WhatsApp, and it lives in the Business app and in the free tiers of honest platforms. What does not exist any more, once you move to the API this October, is a free way to answer customers at scale. Anything advertising that is either subsidising your messages or setting your number up to be banned.
